Since 2014, the YouTube channel edNbo offers with great passion high quality vinyl rips accompanied by detailed photos of each release to constitute an encyclopedic and cultural type of channel around electronic music from the 90s but also more recent (2000 until today). The channel focuses on certain styles in particular; Trip Hop, Abstract Hip Hop, Downtempo, Drum n Bass, Jungle, Nu Jazz, Future Jazz and Lounge. The channel also wants to expand with other styles (Breaks, Techno, Ambient, Experimental…)
Each recorded piece (vinyl digitization) is intended to be done at maximum gain without clipping for maximum listening comfort. This therefore requires a different recording setting for each song and may require multiple takes.
Once all the tracks of a vinyl record digitalized, They are all re-exported one by one via the software Audacity to apply a start and end cut. I also take this opportunity to do a complete and final listening to each track to make sure there are no faults. Sometimes deletions of clips are applied when they are too marked. Since some vinyl records can be dated up to thirty years old, it is not always easy to find them in perfect condition. Namely that all vinyl records of the collection are either in mint or near mint condition.
Once the part of the audio work is done, each vinyl record is photographed in detail (front and back cover, gatefold in and out when it is a gatefold edition, the inners when there are some as well as each side of the vinyl record(s). Once again, this part requires time and several attempts in order to obtain optimal photos (framing, sharpness…etc). Once this step is complete, the best photos in RAW format are re-exported in JPEG format and with the optimal dimensions to be integrated into a video intended for the web (YouTube in this case). For each photo, some edits are applied such as lens correction and a slight color adjustment to get as close as possible to the original object.
Once all these audio and photo elements are ready, the whole is compiled to make an audiovisual montage on the software Final Cut and each track / video is exported one by one. So we come to the moment of the YouTube upload with this time a census of the information of each vinyl record (via the site Discogs) which will be inserted in the description of each upload. An in-depth research of each track is carried out to garnish as much as possible the publications sharing each video on the various edNbo social network pages (including anecdotes, dates and links to artists, labels…etc.). It also helps me to assign specific tags to each video added to the channel.
